Wrap-contrast is a superb idea. This document is purely a spec though right? The image in the linked page was just a mockup or is there beta code for these features?
You can use shape-outside: <image> in recent builds of Chrome and WebKit to wrap around an image's alpha channel. It only applies to left and right floats - affecting multiple columns is a bit further in the future
