Depends on how is prepared. If you heat it and prep it the right away it makes a fantastic sleep med. If you don't prep it right you get delirious and people can hurt themselves. You also can't take too much or that can also become delerious. I think that's why it never caught on even though it's far more effective than any other over the counter sleep inducing herb or supplement(in my experience)

Not all hallucinations are pleasant. Magic mushrooms are known to be pleasurable for many people, but I've heard these mushrooms are not very fun and can last days. Given these effects have been known for a long time there could be a good reason it never caught on

If you find a good sleep med it can be life changing. I found a natural supplement called muscimol that's a silver bullet for me. Gets me to sleep in 20 minutes every time, gives me great sleep, and isn't habit forming. It can be hard to find because people like to try to take huge doses to trip, even though it's an awful delirious experience(never tried it but read stories).

At low doses though it works by mimicking GABA in the brain, so it actually increases REM sleep time. A lot of sedatives will get you to sleep but give you worse sleep because it's working in a very unnatural way. It totally eliminates the issue of taking a long time to fall asleep.

Now you still have to be able to get yourself to bed in the first place, but that's half the battle already won. My life is so much better using it as I've always had a hard time falling asleep. Hopefully we'll have similar medication available to everyone soon as I really think it can solve a lot of suffering people experience

I'm curious what kind of effect alcohol has on IQ. Alcohol is very well established to be pretty bad for brain health even if you don't always feel it.

I am a computer scientist. I studied CS in university, worked in the semiconductor industry for a while, got started as a participant in the challenge aspect of the Vesuivus Challenge. They were hiring, I sent in an application, interviewed, and was offered the job.

Very cool. I have a friend with cerebral palsy and he has very little movement in his hands. I'd love to connect him with these kinds of devices but he has an intellectual disability that makes it especially tough. I wish there was an easy affordable way to get someone who can give advice to a guy like him. He's learned to use an iPhone because SIRI does a lot of things for him, but computers are difficult for him. Which is very limiting
