I came back from retirement for a couple reasons, one as a hedge against the stock market due to AI. Two, the camaraderie built by working with other people. Three, the opportunity to mentor young people.
AI has made the whole situation suck. Stock market is stressful due to energy and AI. AI has left people working alone managing agents. Any advice regarding development best practices I give to young people might have made sense 3 years ago, but hardly matters now. I look around at all these young people and wonder if they are going to be okay. It has only served to make me feel depressed and put a name and face to any future displacement.
Yeah, it's really hard to keep pushing honestly. I have no idea where this is going to end up, but I think there will still be space for higher-quality, more interoperable tools for quite a while. I'm also coaching them to treat software as a thing they can use to boost their real careers, not as a thing that will be a career.
The Chinese have been bragging about taking out one of their own satellites in a test of their capabilities for 8 years now. Russia would but they don't have the money to even try.
This place is no better than X...seriously...it is just too small for the propaganda operations to target and yet it is still just as bad. I don't even think it is HN's fault, just the skew of the population HN attracts.
Not even sure who I'm supposed to be propagandising for here, but as the person that actually works on European dual use satellite tech I can assure you it's well established fact that all superpowers have taken out their own satellites with ASAT weaponry (Russia more recently than China fwiw, though China's in-space capabilities are likely a lot better). None of those are a violation of the very narrow anti-WMD proscriptions in the Outer Space Treaty, and whatever counterspace capability the US is vaguely announcing here (or indeed the capability they and their adversaries have had for years) is unlikely to be either.
I agree with this. When people say speed, they often mean cycle time. How fast can I iterate towards a working solution to a problem? A low cycle time can hide many flaws in your staff and hiring. Experienced developers can go slower and be more deliberate because they know where they are generally headed, so they need fewer cycles to get there.
I think it is more than just money. Having a hand in steering the ship that they think will change the world is pretty attractive. I came out of retirement just to watch the spectacle.

While I certainly have no hand in steering the ship, agentic building brought me out of hibernation/mild depression. I am neither young, nor rich. However, I still had lots of product ideas, and now I am able to create and test them in days. And yes, I am actually making sales now.
I got into this early at Sonnet 3.5 release time, so I went through initial AI psychosis almost two years ago, but still today, I am more excited to wake up and work than I’ve ever been in my life.
The respect only goes as far as to listen to what they have to say. We navigate our experience based on the whims of the rich so it helps to know what they are thinking, but it certainly doesn't confer much respect. Most are completely out of touch.
I trolled there, with a kernel of truth. The neutral version is that wealth is a contributor to respect that's unusually strong in the US and I do think that it goes back to Calvinism.
I am pretty sure human level intelligence is emergent from language use. The more complex the language the higher the intelligence since language is itself a tool used to not only to communicate, but also classify the human experience. Without language, we are fairly primitive relying on instincts and more primitive communication. Feral children are an example of what a base state might be.
Looks like we may be going to go back to the geocities days of primitive websites. I use still use hugo to generate my personal site automatically from markdown upon PR approval.
