And homeopathy works because people pay for it.

Homeopathy works as a business because of marketing :)

I doubt it is brand recognition and more an abstract kind of marketing you mean. Esoteric word of mouth.

I specifically avoid products i see ads for, cause the product can't be that great if it needs obnoxious advertisements, so the effect is more than subconscious. Now, i don't see many ads cause i block all of them where i can and roadside advertisements are not allowed here in Germany, but even if i was, i am of the opinion that the effect of this subliminal manipulation is severely overstated by the people selling ad space. I think the idea that i would buy something just because a company writes their name everywhere is ridiculous and as far as i know studies show that the effect on buying decisions is basically not measurable. I think the entire value in advertisements is just more people in general knowing of a brand.

Quick, name three tyre brands. No, not those ones - ones for which you've never seen an ad

fwiw, while I can mention firestone, bf goodrich, more michelin, what I actually did on my last tires is drive to the tire shop and go whatever les schwab sells in-house. Promotion and distribution need not be confined to the internet. I saw the tire shop while driving, so I guess you could point out they have a business sign.

That's missing the point, or supporting it. That is brand recognition/knowledge and not a factor in decision making. Knowing three tire brands doesn't tell you if i would buy any of them because of their ads. Personally i never bought tires, mine just are whatever "Mercedes Original" branded ones the car comes with. If i had the need to buy new ones i would get some recommendations. I would not go "I'll buy X because i saw the name a few times". It's hard to think of any buying decisions i make where ads could matter. When i buy a phone i decide based on features with the highest priority being that it runs GrapheneOS. When i go shopping for clothes i don't look at the brands at all, and i avoid any pieces with visible branding on it. I can't think of a point in my live where i picked some product because i saw it or the brand in an ad. The subconscious part is so hard to measure and disprove but it is just as hard to prove it works as advertised. Ads might make you remember a name, but i am questioning how much that affects my buying decisions, especially when it makes me trust the brand less when they have to fill every ad slot for people to even talk about them.

I did that exact thing with GLM-5.3 from Z.ai with a chinese IP Camera. And i did not have to trick it in any way.

I'm curious, how well do z.ai reverse engineers protocols ? Is it good enough that we'll see Chinese device makers creating low cost hardware clones, that connect to western software ?

I had it do the opposite: reverse engineer the protocol for the Eufymake E1 UV printer so that I can connect my own software to it.

It did a pretty good job.

Have you published this anywhere? I've been thinking about doing the same thing.

At least Deepseek V4 Flash does it very good.

Why does this look exactly like https://pairdrop.net/ ?

Pairdrop is listed in the “Inofficial” instances section of Snapdrop’s GitHub FAQ

https://github.com/RobinLinus/snapdrop/blob/master/docs/faq....

Both look like Airdrop. Is this for people who don't have airdrop? I am not seeing the benefits.

Yes, as someone who doesn't use Apple devices Pairdrop is pretty useful.

Is there poop in nature? Well, does a bear shit in the forest?

God this site has atrocious scrolling behavior. Allowing me to scroll halfway to the next "page" but then forcing me to stop scrolling and start again to get to the next one made me close the page half way through.

When a page about a new GUI thing fucks around with well-defined behaviors, back-button, scrolling, widget interaction, I know I can't trust their judgement. We don't want the same things and it's best if I move on.

Isn’t it just scroll-snap?

Nah, this one stops you while you are scrolling and only lets you move on if you stop for a moment.

What about egui and wgpu is not native? Those are both generally what is considered running something natively. Both even mention running "natively" in their descriptions.

I guess what you mean is "OS-provided controls". In that case, ye that is not what this is.

What requirements does it not follow?

>(root)

GrapheneOS is not rooted.

Yep, GrapheneOS is anti-user-freedom.

They do their damndest to prevent owners from having full control of their property, over claims of 'insecurity'.

And complaints of this nature get inane drivel responses of "lol just fork Graphene"

> GrapheneOS is anti-user-freedom.

This is a really, really poor-quality take.

> complaints of this nature get inane drivel responses of "lol just fork Graphene"

It’s a fork of AOSP, which you can just…use.

Uh, no. Shaming a "take" is just tone policing. Owners should own the hardware along with the software both.

Its only since the smartphone era (2008) with locked down shit devices has this view changed. And people challenging this are somehow defective, tone policed, shamed, or likewise.

GrapheneOS users are treated as 'rooted phones', at the exact same time tools that would attack and prevent corporate surveillance (xprivacy, etc) are withheld cause they would involve root.

Even this thread is full of a lot of anti-owner hand wavey shit that amounts to 'we don't trust our users, and fork you'. https://discuss.grapheneos.org/d/18953-why-the-stigma-agains...

> Shaming a “take” is just tone policing

No, that’s called sharing your opinion.

You shared your opinion, someone else shared there’s that just so happened to be “I disagree with you” and suddenly that’s some type of censorship? Nobody is shaming you, either.

> prevent corporate surveillance

Leave the abusive relationship with those entities. Don’t lay this at the feet of the GrapheneOS Project.

If you read their FAQ, you’ll see how limited the OS actually is in retaining your privacy if you still insist on using these providers that don’t respect you.

Said another way: stop trying to solve human problems with technical means.

and definitely stop trying to get others to do it for you for free.

Or, continue: I’m not a cop.

Nobody’s shaming you, reddit refugee.

It is a common userspace decision to lock things to userspace. It’s good hygiene.

If you want less-secure software, use AOSP or one of its many forks.

You’re not defective: you just have different needs and threat model,

and you’re harassing and degrading the public image of a project that’s opinionated in a very welcome way by folks in the security community - especially those who value stability and usability.

"It is a common userspace decision to lock things to userspace"

Yes, running in userspace for the majority of tasks is good hygiene.

Preventing the user from ever escalating beyond that layer on their own devices, however, is restricting their freedom to control their device. When that happens with tractors, cars or other gadgets that's considered anti-user. The same attitude should extend to phones.

You can wipe the device and reinstall whatever at any time.

You have complete control of the device.

You choose to lock certain things when using GrapheneOS. That’s their security model.

If you want to argue that, go study it and argue that.

If your threat model is different, if your desired security model is different, then: it’s not for you, use one of many other options.

Like all software projects, it doesn’t necessarily exist for you - or anyone specifically.

It’s not harming you for it to exist.

Hey, stop wrecking my favorite community with non-debates, it’s done better here.

Thanks.

Nah, Cell Broadcast has a lot less overhead since it does not have to do any routing or delivery confirmation and such. The load does not scale based on recipients which makes it far more reliable during an emergency.

Sorry, maybe I did "carrier replication" wrong - I used the word in a sense of "it is duplicated at the local cell by the towers", instead of getting "fed with 1mio receivers in region X by the telco servercentral HQ"

Im wrong, I guess?

Pretty weird when the moon is as much between earth and sun as the earth is between the moon and the sun.

And when it’s in between we cannot even see it (unless it’s exactly in line).

And when it’s in between we cannot even see it (when it’s exactly in line).

We can see it’s there though - I’d say that also counts.

I believe you were referring to one kind of eclipsed and with my subtle edit I was referring to a different kind of eclipse :)

I can think of one single class of eclipse where the Moon is between the Earth and the Sun (the original comment was about “in-between sun and earth”).

Sometimes Earth is the one that is in between.

Going to start a conspiracy theory that there’s a secret eclipse where the moon goes behind the sun and they won’t let us see it
